Music Video Day- Skills Development

Skills Learnt

Throughout the day jake the video director gave us some tips about editing and directing music videos.

  • For lighting a music video we need to make sure all elements of the video and visible. To add depth of field the the video we can put lights at the back facing toward the cameras.
  • For camera skills we learnt to film at the pace of the music, making slow shots without much, or slow movement, but fast pace panning and movement when the song has higher dynamics.
  • When filming I need to remember to have a loud audio of the song we are filming to, and if we can put introduction clicks at the start of the song. This means that everyone can come in on cue and all the performers are in time to the music, especially when playing instruments.
  • When taking a take, do full length song takes, even if it is at just one camera angle.
  • I also need to make sure I have all props and costume ready and available before the take, in some songs a change of clothes might be needed
  • When performing I need to act large and play to the music and cameras, making sure that i am reacting the the dynamics of the music.
  • When directing i need to excite and engage the performers and make sure i direct all aspects of the performance and camera angles. It doesn't matter if my vocal guidance is heard on the recording because all audio will be just of the chosen song.
  • When editing make sure all the major parts of the video are in, like making a timeline, then chop and choose shots, leaving effects and minor edits until the end.
